About Lyme Disease

What is lyme disease, co-infections?

 About Lyme Disease and Co-Infections

Lyme disease is a bacterial like infection caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, primarily transmitted through the bite of infected black-legged ticks. However, recent research has revealed that Lyme spirochetes may also be present in saliva and could potentially be passed from perspn to person, particularly among intimate partners.  This means that it is not uncommon for one or both partners in a marriage to be carriers of the disease, even if one person shows no symptoms.  Researchers have also discovered that mosquitos, fleas, spiders and scorpions can also be carriers of spirochetes.  Lyme poses significant health challenges due to its wide range of symptoms and potential for long-term complications if untreated. Beyond Lyme disease itself, individuals may also contract co-infections transmitted by the same ticks, further complicating diagnosis and treatment.

Co-Infections Associated with Lyme Disease

Bartonella

  • A bacterial infection that can cause fever, swollen lymph nodes, and neurological symptoms.
  • May lead to vasculitis, skin lesions, and bone pain in chronic cases.

Babesia

  • A parasitic infection affecting red blood cells, similar to malaria.
  • Common symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, and anemia.

Anaplasma/Ehrlichia

  • Bacterial co-infections that can result in flu-like symptoms, including fever, muscle aches, and headaches.
  • Severe cases may involve low white blood cell or platelet counts and liver enzyme elevation.

Rickettsia (Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever)

  • A bacterial infection causing fever, rash, headache, and gastrointestinal symptoms.
  • If untreated, it can lead to severe complications like organ damage.

Mycoplasma

  • Bacteria that can trigger respiratory symptoms, fatigue, and joint pain.
  • Associated with immune dysfunction and chronic inflammation.

Symptoms of Lyme Disease & co-infections

Lyme Disease Symptoms

Symptoms of Lyme disease can vary and are typically categorized into early and late stages, as listed below.

Early Symptoms:

  • Erythema migrans (bull's-eye rash)
  • Fever and chills
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle and joint aches
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Late Symptoms:

  • Severe headaches and neck stiffness
  • Arthritis with joint pain and swelling, particularly in the knees
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat (Lyme carditis)
  • Neurological symptoms like nerve pain, numbness, or tingling
  • Sleep difficulties and cognitive impairments

Co-Infection Symptoms

  • Chronic fatigue and flu-like symptoms that overlap with Lyme disease.
  • Distinct symptoms depending on the specific co-infection, such as anemia with Babesia or rashes with Rickettsia.

General Information About Managing Lyme Disease and Co-Infections

Management of Lyme disease and its associated co-infections involves a comprehensive approach. Early diagnosis is critical to prevent long-term complications. If you suspect Lyme disease or co-infections, consult a lyme-literate medical provider for testing.  Beaware that Lyme related tests many times indicate false negative results.   Ask your provider about this risk associated with the test they want you to get.  Many Lyme literate doctors treat patients based on the symptoms presenting in the individuals and forgo the testing for this reason.
